Singapore central bank Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has launched a S$10 coin to commemorate Singapore founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew 100th birth anniversary, who was born in 1923 (1923 to 2015) and becoming Singapore Prime Minister from 1959 to 1990. Singapore 2nd Prime Minister is Goh Chok Tong (1990 to 2004), and Singapore 3rd & current Prime Minister is Lee Hsien Loong (Since 2004), who is the son of Lee Kuan Yew. Singapore MAS: “The coin pays tribute to his strategic vision, boldness and indomitable spirit that transformed Singapore from a regional trading port to a global manufacturing, business and financial hub, creating opportunities for all Singaporeans.” The LKY100 coin is gold in colour, minted in aluminium bronze, and designed by Singapore local artist Mr Weng Ziyan. Front of Coin: With a diameter of 30mm, it is larger than the current Third Series circulation coins. The design features a portrait of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, accompanied in the foreground by the Marina Barrage, representing Mr Lee’s vision to build a freshwater reservoir in the city, strengthening Singapore’s water resilience. The backdrop is the skyline of the Raffles Place financial district, and two heritage buildings which have witnessed significant milestones in Singapore’s history – Fullerton Hotel (formerly the Fullerton Building/General Post Office) and National Gallery Singapore (formerly the Supreme Court and City Hall). Reverse side: Below the Singapore Coat of Arms, a dual latent image features Mr Lee’s birth year ‘1923’ viewed from one angle, and his 100th birth anniversary ‘2023’ viewed from another. Applications can be made online [2] at https://go.gov.sg/lky100coin-order . Details of the application process are as follows:
- Applications start today and end on 9 June 2023.
- Applications are open to Singapore Citizens (SCs) and Permanent Residents (PRs) only.
- Each applicant will be required to indicate his/her identity number, mobile number and preferred bank branch to collect the coins, from the banks listed in Annex A. An SMS notification will be sent shortly after the application to confirm that it has been received.
- Each applicant can apply for up to five coins. If demand is high, applicants may not be allocated the quantity of coins requested, but can be assured of being allocated at least one coin.
- No upfront payment will be requested at the point of application. Successful applicants will pay for the coin(s), at its face value of $10 each, when collecting the coin(s) at the banks.
SCs or PRs who require in-person assistance with the online application may approach any Community Club/Centre, or the ServiceSG Centres at Our Tampines Hub and One Punggol.
Collection of Coins- The LKY100 coins will be available for collection from September 2023. Successful applicants will receive an SMS notification from mid-August 2023, prior to the collection period allocated to each applicant. The SMS notification will include information on the quantity of coins allocated, collection period and bank branch allocated. All SMS notifications from MAS for the LKY100 coin will not contain any clickable link nor ask for any upfront payment.
- LKY100 coins that are not exchanged during the collection window will subsequently be made available for exchange at the banks by the general public, including non-Singaporeans.

Lee Kuan Yew (1923 to 2015), Singapore Prime Minster 1959 to 1990
United States White House Photo: 1975, May 8 Lee Kuan Yew, State Dinner for the Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew was born in Singapore in 1923. He was educated at Raffles College, Singapore and Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, England. He was called to the Bar, Middle Temple, London, in 1950 and practised law in Singapore. He became advisor to several trade unions. In 1954, he was a founder of the People’s Action Party and was Secretary General up to 1992.
He became Singapore’s Prime Minister in 1959, serving successive terms until he resigned in November 1990, when he was appointed Senior Minister by Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong. He was re-appointed again after the 1991, 1997 and 2001 general elections. He was appointed Minister Mentor by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in August 2004, and was reappointed again after the 2006 general elections. He stepped down as Minister Mentor in May 2011, and was appointed Senior Advisor to the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation. Mr Lee passed away on 23 March 2015.
Lee Hsien Loong, Singapore Prime Minster Since 2004
Mr Lee Hsien Loong has been Singapore’s Prime Minister since 2004. Mr Lee is the Secretary-General of the People’s Action Party (PAP). He led PAP to four consecutive Singapore General Elections victories in 2006, 2011, 2015 and 2020. He was first elected Member of Parliament (MP) in 1984, and has been re-elected eight times, most recently as an MP for the Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency. Mr Lee also chairs GIC, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, and the Research, Innovation and Enterprise Council, an international panel that provides strategic direction for Singapore’s Research and Development efforts. As Prime Minister, he launched SkillsFuture to support Singaporeans in embracing lifelong learning and skills, and the Smart Nation initiative to use technology to create a future of better living, more opportunities and stronger communities.
Before becoming Prime Minister, Mr Lee had held various Ministerial appointments, including being Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Finance, Minister for Trade and Industry and Second Minister for Defence. He was concurrently the Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore from 1998 until 2004.
Before joining politics, Mr Lee had served in the Singapore Armed Forces, retiring as a Brigadier-General. Mr Lee graduated with a B.A. in Mathematics and a Diploma in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge. He was later a Mason Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School, receiving a Master in Public Administration. Mr Lee was born on 10 February 1952. He married Dr Wong Ming Yang in 1978, and was widowed in 1982. He remarried Ho Ching in 1985. He has one daughter and three sons. Mr Lee enjoys reading, photography, walking, listening to classical music, and computer programming.
