The United States NBA basketball league has changed the NBA team ownership policy, allowing sovereign wealth funds & institutional funds including endowments & pension funds to buy a maximum of 20% equity of a NBA team.  The NBA team ownership policy change was made in November 2022.  NBA teams are currently owned by individual owners, such as Brooklyn Nets (Alibaba Joseph Tsai), Charlotte Hornets (Michael Jordan), Dallas Mavericks (Mark Cuban), Los Angeles Clippers (Microsoft Steve Ballmer), Portfolio Trail Blazers (Jody Allen, Sister of the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen).  In November 2022, NBA basketball league launched a private equity business (NBA Equity) to invest in startups, headed by David Lee who had joined in May 2022 (10 years in startup investing, former Bain & Co. consultant).  More info below.

NBA Basketball League Launches Private Equity to Invest in Startup, Each NBA Team will Own 1/30 of NBA Equity NBA

5th November 2022 – NBA basketball league has launched a private equity business (NBA Equity) to invest in startups, headed by David Lee who had joined in May 2022 (10 years in startup investing, former Bain & Co. consultant).  Each NBA team will own 1 of 30 share of NBA Equity (Total no. of NBA Team – 30).   NBA Equity was approved by the NBA Board of Governors in 2021 December.   NBA CFO David Haber: “We were getting more and more outreach from companies that thought it would be incredibly valuable to add the NBA not just as a commercial partner but as an investor.  It really made sense for us to take advantage of the opportunities that are being presented to us in a more structured way.”  NBA was founded in 1946 and has 30 teams today.  NBA’s list of all-time legends includes LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, Stephen Curry, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Kevin Durant, Oscar Robertson, John Havlicek, Tim Duncan, Rick Barry, John Stockton, Allen Iverson, Karl Malone, Elgin Baylor, David Robinson, Julius Erving, Charles Barkley and many more. The National Basketball Association (NBA)

The National Basketball Association, or NBA, is a professional basketball league comprised of 30 teams across North America featuring the best basketball players in the world.  The National Basketball Association was founded at the Commodore Hotel in New York. Maurice Podoloff was the league’s first president, a title later changed to commissioner. Eleven teams were part of that league, originally called the Basketball Association of America. Podoloff’s name is now emblazoned on the NBA MVP trophy.

The NBA is a collection of 30 teams, broken down by two conferences with three divisions apiece.  The Western Conference plays host to the Northwest, Pacific and Southwest Divisions, featuring the following 15 teams:

  • Northwest: Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Oklahoma City Thunder, Portland Trail Blazers, Utah Jazz
  • Pacific: Golden State Warriors, L.A. Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings
  • Southwest: Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, Memphis Grizzlies, New Orleans Pelicans, San Antonio Spurs

The Eastern Conference’s 15 squads also break up across three divisions: the Atlantic, Southeast and Central.

  • Atlantic: Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers, Toronto Raptors
  • Central: Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks
